The biggest development in the field of visual effects for the past forty years has been a revolution in technology, fueled by the powerful combination of computer technology and human ingenuity. And by now computer technology is no longer an opponent but a collaborator in achieving the goals behind the art of visual effects.
With these two fundamental changes, we have seen the first components of the radical shift toward computer-driven and digital methods. As a result we have seen the almost complete elimination of the occasions when effects artists need to go to the lab. By the end of the year we will witness the emergence of new kinds of talent. We will see more people working in a visual effects field who owe their expertise to computers, and are thus able to work in a vastly more flexible environment than in the past. This will mean that the processing of effects will be done in advance rather than on the set.
This is the future and some of the facts and statistics illustrate it. In 1982, the international documentary film industry employed only 15 people who worked exclusively as visual effects artists, and in the UK it was estimated that the industry contributed £9 million to the production of UK films. By 2004 these figures were drastically different, with more than three times as many people employed in the film industry, working virtually exclusively on visual effects. 7211a4ac4a
